Costco in Canada is among national retailers recalling the Rana Meal Solutions product shown. Shoppers in Canada that purchased one of the meal kits made by between September and this month may return it to a Costco warehouse to obtain a full refund, the company said in email and phone alerts on Friday.
"The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) issued a national recall on Rana branded pasta sauce due to possible Listeria contamination.
"All Rana Tagliatelle Seasoned White Chicken & Mushroom Sauce packages with best-before dates from Oct. 10 up to Nov. 16 are being recalled by the CFIA. The pasta sauce can be found in grocery stores nationwide.
"It has been labelled as a Class 1 recall by the CFIA which states that “there is a high risk that consuming the food may lead to serious health problems or death.”
"Contaminated food with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick according to the government agency.
"Symptoms can start as early as three days after ingesting contaminated food where those affected may experience vomiting, nausea, fever, muscle aches, severe headaches and neck stiffness. In severe cases the bacteria can spread to the nervous system where symptoms include confusion, headaches and a loss of balance according to Canada Public Health.
There are no reported illnesses associated with the product yet, though the CFIA is advising anyone with the pasta sauce to dispose of it or return the product to where it was purchased immediately.
"The source of the contamination was a farm in Durant, Oklahoma owned by Oregon company BrucePac. The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service recalled large amounts of ready-to-eat food after detecting listeria during poultry testing."
