SunFed cucumbers sold in U.S. and Canada recalled: salmonella

The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has issued a nationwide recall of all sizes of SunFed Produce cucumbers due to a potential risk of salmonella contamination.

This recall follows a nationwide recall of the product by the FDA in the United States. The recalled cucumbers were sold in Canada and the U.S. between October 12 and November 26, 2024.

The cucumbers were distributed in bulk cardboard containers with a SunFed label,as shown above, or in plastic crates with the growers name, Agrotato, S.A. de C.V., appearing in a sticker on the side. They should not be sold, served or consumed.

Consumers who purchased cucumbers during this period should check with the store at which they were purchased to learn if they are part of the recall. As of November 29, no illnesses in Canada or the U.S. have been reported as a result of salmonella-contaminated cucumbers.

Salmonella can cause serious or sometimes fatal infections in frail or elderly people, young children, or those with compromised immune systems.

Healthy persons infected with salmonella may often experience fever, diarrhea, bloody diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

In rare instances, salmonella infections can lead to more severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.

In Canada, according to the Public Health Agency of Canada, salmonella contributes to 1 in 4 hospitalizations of all food-borne illnesses. Total cases of illness caused by salmonella are estimates at 88,000 per year, resulting in approximately 925 hospitalizations and 17 deaths.
