Canada needs its dairy supply management system

Understanding Supply Management in Canada

Trump wants us to get rid of our “nasty” dairy supply management system and the tariffs on US dairy products. This proposal raises significant concerns about our food security and economic independence.

To do so would ultimately make us dependent on the US to meet a basic nutritional need. The US subsidizes its dairy farmers. It pays them to, in effect, overproduce milk and cheese products. More than needed to meet American consumption. Gallons of milk are discarded every day instead of being processed into milk and cheese products.

The Importance of Canadian Dairy Farmers

Canada ensures its dairy farmers make a decent living while producing an adequate supply of milk at a set price. That’s why it’s called supply management, right? This system protects our farmers from the volatile market conditions that can devastate their livelihoods.

If Canada gets rid of its supply management system and eliminates tariffs on dairy products imported from the US, cheap milk and cheese products will flood Canada. Canadian dairy farmers will lose their farms, and we will be dependent on the US for this basic nutritional need.

The Consequences of Dependence

We can have cheaper milk and cheese in exchange for dependence on a foreign power that has proven itself to be entirely self-serving. This dependence could lead to increased prices and reduced quality over time, as we would be at the mercy of US producers.

Economic Implications

The economic implications of dismantling our dairy supply management system are profound. Canadian dairy farmers contribute significantly to the economy. They provide jobs, support local communities, and ensure that we have access to high-quality dairy products. Losing this system could mean losing these benefits.

Nutritional Considerations

From a nutritional standpoint, relying on US dairy products could compromise the quality of our food supply. The US dairy industry has faced criticism for its practices, including the use of hormones and antibiotics. Canadians deserve to know where their food comes from and how it is produced.

The Cost of Cheap Dairy

Personally, I don’t think it’s worth the extra $450 per year the average Canadian family supposedly spends on dairy products compared to American families. The potential loss of our dairy farmers and the quality of our food supply far outweighs any perceived savings.

The debate over Canada's dairy supply management system is crucial. It’s not just about prices; it’s about our food security, economic stability, and the quality of our nutrition. We must carefully consider the long-term impacts of any changes to this system.

Let's protect our farmers and ensure that we continue to have access to high-quality dairy products that meet our needs. The future of Canadian dairy depends on it.
